What is the AI Audit?

The AI Audit is a set of short exercises, offered as a courtesy while they are being built, that shows where a small business stands with AI: the people doing the work, the tools already in place, the data moving through the business, and the goals it is working toward. Each exercise is quick, and each one’s results are emailed when it is finished.

Two exercises are ready now, each on its own page: AI Land, which looks at people, and Power Up Your Stack, the AI Stack Audit, which looks at tools. Choose either one at the top of this page. More exercises, including the founder audit, are being added, and together they will build a dashboard where the owner can see the business’s progress toward putting AI to work.

What is the first exercise, AI Land?

AI Land is an AI skills assessment in the shape of a board game. Twelve quick tap questions test how effectively a person really uses AI at work, across six skills: directing AI, feeding it the right context and data, checking its work, building systems others can run, handling risk and data, and knowing when AI is the wrong tool. What is the second exercise, the AI Stack Audit?

The AI Stack Audit checks whether your people have the right tools for their jobs, played as a game called Power Up Your Stack. Each person stacks their SaaS tools (the office suite, customer, sales, and money apps) and their AI tools (assistants, specialist AI, automation), then powers their jobs with them and sees what lights up. It shows where the two stacks connect and where they do not, which overlaps are smart Specialist Pairs and which are Double Draws, and the leaks: jobs done by hand, work in personal accounts, tools nobody opens, and retyping between tools. The result is Stack Power, the share of the work the tools actually power. It audits the tools, never the person, and it is scored separately from AI Land.

Why should a small business audit AI before buying AI tools?

A small business should audit AI first because AI is an amplifier. If your systems are loose, your data habits are risky, or your team is guessing, AI spreads that faster than you can control it. The audit shows where the leverage and the risks are before you add another subscription or ask your staff to absorb one more change.

The research points the same way. In McKinsey’s 2026 State of AI survey, nearly nine in ten respondents reported regular use of AI in at least one business function, while 37 percent attributed at least some EBIT impact to AI and about 6 percent met McKinsey’s definition of an AI high performer. Boston Consulting Group found that 74 percent of companies have yet to show tangible value from their use of AI. RAND Corporation reports that, by some estimates, more than 80 percent of AI projects fail, twice the rate of IT projects that do not involve AI. The failure is rarely the technology. It is the absence of a defined problem, people ready to use it well, and the discipline to make either one stick.

What will the full AI Audit cover?

The full AI Audit will look at the business from four connected directions, one exercise at a time:

1. People and workflows. How effectively each person uses AI today, and where their habits create risk. AI Land covers this now.
2. Foundation and goals. The founder audit: where AI sits in the business, the goal it should move first, and what has held you back.
3. Tools and subscriptions. Whether people have the right tools for their jobs, what you already pay for, and what is going unused. The AI Stack Audit covers this now.
4. Data, privacy, and security. How sensitive information moves through the business, and whether the business can absorb AI safely.

Each exercise adds to the owner’s dashboard as it is completed, so the picture fills in over time rather than all at once.

Who is the AI Audit for?

The AI Audit is for small business owners and operators who know AI matters but cannot yet see where it fits, how ready their people are, or what should happen first. It suits a business that has tried a few tools and felt scattered, or one that has not started and wants solid ground under the first decision.

What does the AI Audit not include?

The AI Audit is a bird’s-eye view, not a complete operational map, production architecture, deployment plan, or finished implementation. It shows where AI may fit, where the risks and readiness gaps are, and what deserves a closer look. When the work reaches a build, that becomes its own engagement.

What comes after the AI Audit?

What comes after the AI Audit depends on what it shows. For some businesses the next step is a Digital Employee Build: an AI agent with a defined job, grounded in the context of your business. For others it is training, a small pilot, or getting more out of software they already own. Sometimes the right next step belongs to another specialist. You are never locked in.

You do not need to play Knowing Your Why or Build Your Business Brain before the AI Audit, but they help. Both are exercises offered as a courtesy that get you thinking through the context of your business, and they will count toward your progress on the owner’s dashboard.
